As a natural born leader, she is able to demonstrate the leadership traits and serve as a living example of the Navy Core Values of honor, courage, and commitment. Her sound and knowledgeable recommendations combined with her genuine concern for the welfare of the Cadets under her charge, are a testament to the success of the New-Cadet Color Guard team where her leadership efforts led the team to DMA winning overall first place and top school at the 2022 Rancocas Valley Regional High School Drill Meet. JUNIOR: Cadet Katelyn Kohan has been nominated by Master Chief King to represent the Junior Class as Shining Seahawk for the month of March 2022. Katelyn is kind and helpful and perhaps one of the nicest 11th grade cadets at DMA. She is ALWAYS smiling...in the hallway, on her way into the classroom, during class, on her way out... and even working in DMA’s Supply room. She's a bundle of positive energy every single day. We can count on her to participate in any event or activity at DMA. She serves as one of the Company Supply Officer’s – a position of great responsibility. In this capacity she receives, stows, issues, and maintains an accurate inventory for over $300,000 of NJROTC clothing and uniform material. Her can-do attitude and commitment to excellence contributed to an overall grade of OUTSTANDING during DMA’s 2022 Annual Military Inspection. She takes pride in singing the National Anthem, most recently during the Junior ring ceremony and supports Seahawk pride by regularly attending DMA events. She displays a positive demeanor and unparalleled maturity for her age, is always polite and respectful, and maintains an impeccable appearance in uniform. SENIOR: Cadet Jacob Botterbusch has been nominated by 1st Sergeant Worthy for the Shining Seahawk Award for the month of March! Cadet Botterbusch has been nothing short of amazing as a leader within the drill team. His positive “can do,” and “let’s get it done” attitude is one for all to emulate. He is committed, loyal, and a constant motivator at every practice and drill meet. Cadet Botterbusch exceeds every challenge no matter how overwhelming it may appear. He is a forward thinker with a creative mind that has gotten the attention of many in the “JROTC world of drill.” I have personally witnessed his work as the commander for both the (2) two man, and (10) ten-man exhibition drill team. Cadet Botterbusch, along with his teammate of the (2) man drill performance, have made a team respected by their fellow cadets, DMA staff, all who witness a performance. Their (2) two man-drill performance at our most recent Area Manager’s Inspection demonstrated the level of his expertise. Recently, Cadet Botterbusch was given the assignment to assemble, train, and prepare a ten (10) man exhibition drill team for an upcoming drill meet. With a limited amount of time, Cadet Botterbusch designed the routine, taught, and prepared all the members for the drill performance at Rancocas Valley High School Drill Meet. The team performed for over 200 drill participants and excelled in bringing home a first place finish. Cadet Botterbusch embodies the heart of champion in every regard. His energy and spirit is contagious. As he prepares for graduation, he leaves a legacy of success for others to follow. The drill team members and coaches will miss him, but his superior performance will continue to inspire us for many years to come. Congratulations Cadet Botterbusch for a job well done and thank you for your leadership, commitment, and dedication! Semper Fi & Bravo Zulu!

When I think of DMA's three ships, Katelyn exhibits all of them in her day-to-day happenings. Leadership, Scholarship, and Citizenship beams straight through her shining seahawk personality! Some of the things that stand out to me about her is that she is always looking for ways to help her fellow cadets, albeit, shining shoes, schoolwork, drill, or managing a sport. During drill, she always wants to be up front learning and teaching. In the class, she does a great job as an assistant platoon leader maintaining good order and discipline. Additionally, she motivates the class to get involved and to do more. This type of influence is a direct reflection of her own personal accountability to do more and be a better person. For instance, in the fall, she was a manager for the football team. Currently, she is doing All-star cheer, and in the spring, she will be playing Lacrosse. In preparation for DMA’s Annual Military Inspection, she worked hard with the platoon to tighten up their GOTTS and National COC knowledge, along with teaching / helping cadets in preparing their uniforms to be inspection ready. Furthermore, she has done all of this while maintaining a 96% GPA in Naval Science. Congratulations Katelyn and thank you for all your hard work and dedication to DMA and the NJROTC program. You are an outstanding ambassador for DMA and a superb example of a “Shining Seahawk!”

SOPHOMORE: Cadet Tjaden-Smith has been nominated by Mr. Lingenfelter. Sometimes we don't always get to see the other side of cadets we teach here at DMA. We rely on grades and observations to judge a cadet in terms of their accomplishments. We tend to let go by the way side, a person's personality, the true gene of one's make-up. Cadet Tjaden-Smith has worked very hard to become a good, responsible, and well balanced citizen. The one thing that stands out is her personality, it has a unstoppable desire to let her be her. I believe that, without a rock solid foundation, you could waver to an undetermined journey in life. Geovanna has put forth a learning style here at DMA that could be contagious if others would choose to follow her path. I am so proud to see that her integrity and discipline has guided her to becoming one of DMA's finest. Being chosen Seahawk of the Month has added strength to her wings. Congrats kiddo, well deserved.
JUNIOR: Cadet Adriana Ferreiro has been nominated by Mr. Townsend. She is an absolute thrill to have at the Delaware Military Academy this fall. She goes above and beyond in the Algebra 2 classroom, and can often be found helping the other students around her through the most difficult of problems. In addition to earning a 100 in math for the marking period she scored the highest of all students on the midterm. Much like the word Algebra, her report card started and ended with A’s. She contributes to class discussions with thought-provoking questions in her Honors U.S. History course, and is conscientious of all assignments and expectations in her Anatomy course. Adrianna works exceptionally hard for academic success, while also working hard outside of the school at her part-time job. To top it off she took a great risk this November in joining the DMA swimming team despite having never swam competitively before, where she is excelling quickly in the water and bringing her positivity and work ethic to practice every day.
SENIOR: Cadet Josh Brennan has been nominated by Mr. Lingenfelter. Josh has become one of the top outstanding cadets at DMA since I’ve arrived here in 2014. There is nothing he hasn’t been able to do or accomplish here, especially his journey to rise to the top of his class. I am so proud to have watched him grow, to have witnessed his caring demeanor, and to see his performance in the Navel Science aspect grow among the best at this school. A leader by far, his workaholic attitude, and the willingness to develop his personal growth to climb up the ladder in rank. I am proud to have taught him, and even more proud to nominate him for Shining Seahawk of the Month for November. Thank you, Josh, and yes, you have made a difference here at DMA. Bravo Zulu.

Bravo Zulu.
Shining Seahawks for October 2021
FRESHMAN: Cadet Cael DeNigris has been nominated by Ms. Limmina for Shining Seahawk for the month of October. Cadet DeNigris is a superstar on and off the field. He is dominating as a freshman on the varsity football team, starting both on the offensive and defensive lines. While Cael dominates on the field he also dominates in the classroom. He is one of the top performers in Algebra holding the highest average in his class and his achievement goes even further. He has successfully helped many other students in the class raise their scores as well. He loves to help others and shows patience and care when working with his classmates. He wants them to do well too. He is a leader. While Cael manages a very busy schedule and has a long commute to and from school, he has never once made excuses. He gets done what he needs to get done and he does it well. Cael shows extreme motivation and determination to succeed in the classroom and on the field. I cannot wait to watch Cael in the NFL someday. I know with his determination he will succeed in whatever path he so chooses. Cael, I will be waiting for your on TV shout out to your high school math teacher when you make it big!
The Commandant and Mr. Jeanne would like to nominate BJ Alleyne and Angelina Gennusa for Shining Seahawk for the month of October. Both BJ and Ang are always willing to help out whenever or for whatever is needed. Most recently, they both (on last minute notice) volunteered to attend an information seminar for 8th grade students at New Castle Charter school. Both cadets without really even knowing what was entailed brought their energy and optimistic attitudes and talked to 7th and 8th grade students about all the wonderful opportunities at DMA. This is but just one example of their leadership, positive attitude and outgoing personality that make them both such awesome cadets, leaders and ambassadors of DMA.
As we always say, you put out for DMA, give us your best and you can expect it back ten-fold. Ang and BJ you have certainly earned the respect of the Staff and your peers and are most deserving of Shining Seahawks for the month of October!
SENIOR: Cadet Ursillo has been nominated by Ms. Limmina for Shining Seahawk for the month of October. Cadet Ursillo is the true embodiment of a shining seahawk. He holds so many amazing qualities but to begin he is one of the most positive students that I have. Cadet Ursillo lights up every room he walks into he. He comes into my room every day with a smile on his face, ready for class and eager to learn. Not only does he hold one of the highest averages in the course, he enjoys helping others achieve success in the class too. He is not finished when he completes an assignment, he is finished when he is done helping others. He has set this standard for himself and is a true role model. He succeeds when his classmates succeeds. Cadet Ursillo excels not only in math but his entire character embodies that of a shining seahawk. He is positive, respectful, respected by his peers and teachers, motivated, kind and a true leader. I know that Cadet Ursillo will succeed in all his future endeavors and I can’t wait to see all he accomplishes in his career past DMA.

Shining Seahawks for September 2021
FRESHMAN: Cadet Ava Amato has been nominated by First Sergeant Worthy. Cadet Amato embraces the very philosophy of Delaware Military Academy by being very well rounded. She displays honor and discipline by the way she presents herself every day. She is a person of integrity, and has begun her journey as a leader by assuming the role of Administrative Cadet for her platoon. She shows responsibility by ensuring that each cadet has the needed information to be successful within the NJROTC class. Cadet Amato exemplified herself in the wearing of her uniform from the very first day. She can be counted on to have superior appearance and individual excellence. You will notice quickly that Cadet Amato has set herself apart by embracing the DMA culture of Leadership, Citizenship, and Scholarship. It is a pleasure to have Cadet Amato in class. Based on her track this far, I am expecting upward movement for Cadet Amato. Cadet Amato is highly recommended for this prestigious award and she will represent the Shining Seahawk in an excellent manner.
SOPHOMORE: Cadet Sophie Swift has been nominated by Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Short, who say they think they can speak for all of her teachers when they say that she truly brings life into her classes and serves as a positive role model for her peers. She's always willing to answer questions and contibute to class discussion. She is a well-rounded student who is highly respected by the faculty. Sophie does everything asked of her without a single complaint. Her sweet and outgoing personality, paired with her willingness to help anyone around her, truly make her a stand-out student. Congratulations Cadet Swift!
JUNIOR: Cadet Vaughn Hurdis has been nominated by Mrs. Harkey. Vaughn Hurdis is a cadet who demonstrates respect to staff and cadets. He keeps his word. Cadet Hurdis excels in the classroom, having achieved an "A" in every music class since his freshman year. He always works to his potential, and challenges himself to achieve the next level of skill. His work is done on time, and is completed exceptionally well. He participates fully and encourages those around him to do the same. He goes above and beyond his academic role and regularly provides guidance and instruction to classmates during independent practice time. Congratulations Cadet Hurdis!
SENIOR: Cadet Josh Gutzmirtl has been nominated by Mr. Lingenfelter. I believe we have something here at DMA that hasn't been seen in a long time. Watching Josh perform his duties in front of the entire student body, his teachers, and our administrators, with dignity and honor, is a moment that gives Delaware Military Academy the prestige and honor it so well deserves. Each moment he performs a command, he shows his peers what is expected. He leads with sternness and demands perfection. I am in awe when he leads the entire Regiment in Parade. His uniform is perfect, his marching skills are unbelievable, and he has the respect of all his peers. He leads by example, time after time, and is continually admired by the Navel Science Department. I am honored to have had him as a student, but more amazed at how he has grown into this school's leader as the Regimental Commander. Well done Josh, you have made us all so proud, and you sir, have lived what many can only dream of. Welcome to the Mountain Top my friend.
